With the spring semester coming to a close, most werking students are on full grind mode, flipping pages, staring at screens, and ingesting copious quantities of caffeine at less than ideal hours of the night.
If you're anything like me, those silent moments, trying not to give into boredom and avoiding Kanye's latest Twitter Shenanigans can be quite maddening. Luckily, with the curation help of Robert Freeman (Follow on IG: @yungbobbyfree94), I have the perfect playlist to keep your mind at ease, on focus and always werking!
1. Loving is Easy- Rex Orange County
One of 2017's hidden gems. It's hard not to feel bliss when this song is on. Rex Orange county has been getting more shine lately, thanks to an appearance on Tyler, the Creator's "Flower Boy" and more recently, on the Jimmy Fallon Show.
2. Flowers- J Dilla
The legendary J Dilla needs no introduction and neither does his work. This track feels like summer and helps keep me in a positive mindset when studying gets intense.
3. Film- Aphex Twin
Aphex Twin serving up Steven Universe vibes before Steven Universe was thought of. This track is pure easy listening, whimsical and lighthearted with drums that will keep your mind racing.
4. Wondaland- Janelle Monae
Don't fall asleep! This song is a much needed burst of energy after long sessions. A subtle groove that mostly recedes to the background with some really atmospheric moments.
5. Coronus, the Terminator- Flying Lotus
FlyLo is another legend in hip hop production that pushed the genre forward with forward thinking, avant-garde beats that are easy to get lost in. Throw this one on repeat!
6. Duality- Flying Lotus
Flying Lotus had the underground shook in 2013 with the mystery of Captain Murphy. Plenty of grade-A Adult Swim-esque production should leave lot's of 90's baby students feeling right at home.
7. Thuggin (instumental)- Madlib x Freddie Gibbs
If you missed out on Madlib x Freddie Gibbs 2014 collab, Pinata, and consider yourself a fan of hip hop, you're doing yourself a disservice by missing out on one of this decades undeniable classics. The instrumentals are just as polarizing as the hard hitting rhymes that would accompany them.
8. Knicks (instrumental)- Madlib x Freddie Gibbs
I couldn't resist! Another Pinata beat. Seriously, get hip!
9. Boblo Boat- Royce da 5'9 x J. Cole
Be sure to check out Royce da 5'9's new album The Book of Ryan! This is great for a late night session, just try not to get distracted by the master storytelling at work by both these wordsmiths.
10. Gotta Get Up (Interlude)- Kali Uchis
I'll put it out there right now. Isolation is my summer anthem and definitely one of the hottest pop/R&B albums of 2018. This little interlude is 1:53 of pure perfection. Just listen...
11. Summer Madness (homework mix)- Kool and the Gang
Is there such thing as too much of a good thing? This mix puts that question to rest. Summer madness is one of those songs I'd put in almost any playlist. For a particularly rough session, an hour long mix of one of the smoothest songs of all time is welcome!
These jazzy vibes and atmospheric beats are perfect for staying in the zone and retaining information. One great tip for studying is to take 10 minute breaks every 30 minutes you study. That way, you retain the information you already know and give yourself a much needed break before proceeding with your next task. Stretch out, grab a snack, listen to some livelier music to wake you up!
It's almost over, fellow students! You can do it! Keep going, hustle hard, and stay werking.
