I'll admit, I wasn't hip to SZA (pronounced Sizza) until she was featured on Rihanna's track Consideration from"ANTI". But after hearing her sing on that track, I had to go creep on her IG to get a feel for the artist. From her photos, SZA gives me the 'laid back, super chill, one of the guys' vibe. And her hair gives me life!
But my scroll through her social media and playing Love Galore back to back didn't prepare me for the raw, honest lyrics of "CTRL".
On Replay Daily: Supermodel The Weekend, Go Gina, Drew Barrymore, Broken Clocks, Love Galore, Garden (Say It Like Dat)
Supermodel, the first song on the album and the first song I played, pushed me so deep into my feelings I had to do some deep breathing to keep from crying. Super dramatic, but I know that any girl that has been through that insecure phase felt her pain in the lyrics.
After I played The Weekend, the first thing that came to my mind: These n---- is for everybody! I respect her for being open with us but I can't get down with sharing a man. I still sing my heart out when it comes on though.
Martin and Gina obviously influenced the creation of Go Gina , which SZA confirmed during an interview with the Breakfast Club. She thought if Gina wasn't so 'uptight' and lived in the moment, she'd enjoy life more.
If you haven't put CTRL in rotation yet, you're slipping. Give it play, I promise it's the chill, smooth vibe your summer nights needs.
